The Governing Body

The Governing Body at The North School is committed to supporting and challenging the leadership of the School to ensure that school improvement is paramount and the potential of students is maximised.

The details of the governors can be found below.  Please note the non confidential minutes to the Governing Body meetings are available on request from [email protected] .

Governing Body Members

Liesl York – Chair

Co-opted Governor

(NO PHOTO AVAILABLE)

As Chair of Governors I am highly committed to the success of The North School and seek to ensure continuous improvement.

Having lived in Ashford all my life, I now work for the Local Authority after a twenty five year career in the financial sector.

I have three children who attend The North School and I am keen to use my skills and ability to help positively shape the future of all the young people who attend the school.  The school is part of my community and I am keen to challenge and be ambitious for the school to allow all students to achieve their own personal potential.

Alan Barham

Co-opted Governor

I am retired but like to keep active in terms of work and keeping healthy, e.g. walking and cycling.

Currently I am Direct of Swale Academies Trust, Chari of the Trust Secondary Schools Executive Group, Chair of Swale Iclusion Service, Chair of Maidstone & Malling Alternative Provision, Chair o Sallygate Independent School Management Committee and Governor of The North School.  I advise and chair Westminster Briefing Education Conference.

Our childrenand partners plus six grandchildren keep us occupied and young at heart.

George Clifton

Co-opted Governor

I am a retired Logistics Manager residing on a 1.5-hectare smallholding near Sittingbourne.  My hobbies include driving and maintaining my classic 1962 Rover, caring and tending to the garden and orchard at my home.

I have been a governor of Westlands School, Sittingbourne since 1990 and I am currently Chair of that Local governing Body.  I also serve as a governor on two other Local Governing Bodies within Swale Academies Trust and am also a founding member of the Trust together with being Chair of that organisation.

For many years, I was treasurer of the Kent Federation of Parent Teacher Associations and on their behalf represented parents on the Kent funding Forum which deals with financial issues affecting schools at county level.

Paul Cooke

Co-opted Governor

Originally a parent governor, I have served on The North School's governing body for nine years.  For six years I served as the Chair, from which I stepped down in September 2017.

With a financial background I play an active role within the financial controls of the school.  I also believe very strongly in fairness, not only for students, but also the parents and school employees.

The school has made massive strides forward over the last few years and we must ensure this momentum remains.

Mrs Lyn Greenfield

Co-opted Governor - Vice Chair

In my role as co-opted governor at The North School I am particularly interested in theelfare and educational provision that The North School offers our children.

I have lived in Ashford all my life and have attended local schools and believe that The North School forms an important part of our community.  For the past twenty eight years I have worked for a large Ashford-based company and have a role in customer services which involves dealing with clients, staff and visitors from different backgrounds in a range of positions.  Within this role I challenge the business to improve processes and record outcomes accurately; I also monitor results and seek improvements and am solution focused.  These are all skills that I am able to bring to the Governing Body at the school.

Following a successful election process in September 2017 I am now the Vice Chair of the Governing Body which will mean I can continue to enhance my skills in governance which will help me to hold the school to account.

Mrs Vicki Jessel

Co-opted Governor

I have lived in Kent for seventeen years and have two teenage children at school in Canterbury.

As a family we farm in Brabourne with a mixture of arable, grassland, stock and five alpacas.  I am the farm secretary responsible for the day to day running of the business including accounts, commercial and holiday lets and our event centre Penstock Barn.

Before moving to Kent I was Marketing Director at Savills for ten years running a busy department and I hope to use my knowledge gained over this period to the benefit of The North School.

I am also a new non-executive Director of Swale Academies Trust.

Mrs Julie Pyatt

Co-opted Governor

I have enjoyed fifteen years as a teacher of business and finance and relished challenging the parameters of the classroom ensuring that studentshave skills to make them successful within their personal and professional lives.  I have fulfilled roles such as Head of IT, Business and Finance; Head of Careers Education and Enocomic & Emotional Well-being across the curriculum; Leader of work experience and employer links and Co-ordinator of work scrutiny to ensure high standards demonstrated in students books over time.

I am currently working for The London Institute of Banking and Finance engaging schools with high quality financial education.

I feel passionately that every child deserves a positive, high quality education that equips them for employment and provides them with skills for life.

Mrs Jacqueline Spain

Co-opted Governor

I am an Ashfordian, I have five children and two grandchildren, all having been or still in the process of being educated in the local schools.  I was very active in local sport, playing hockey for Ashford and netball in the Ashford leagues.

My interest in becoming a governor stems from wanting all children to have the best education possible for them as an individual, to be involved in that process and to give something back to the community.  I look forward to playing an active part in some way that supports the School and its students.  I appreciate there is a lot to learn but that is a challenge and learning curve I think I would enjoy.

Running a local business has broadened my experience in terms of finance, staff management and working as a team.  I believe my life skills as a busy working mother and my genuine interest and love for people would add something to the board of governors.  Time management is a particular strength!

Mr Neil Wickens

Parent Governor

I’m married with two children – my son attends The North School and my daughter is at Willesborough Junior School. I moved to Ashford in 2001 and to date my career has been within the public sector, specifically policing and criminal justice.

I have significant experience in performance management, audit/compliance and the development of organisational strategy. My current role includes managing governance and scrutiny arrangements, building relationships with partners and delivering specific projects to support organisational objectives. In particular I am the lead officer for work to improve services to those in mental health crisis and I also manage engagement with young people across the county.

I am keen to use my experience and knowledge to positively shape and influence the education local children receive. I am committed to both supporting and challenging the head teacher to ensure pupils receive not only the best education possible, but also the necessary life skills to make a really positive contribution to society.

I welcome this opportunity to contribute to the development of the school for the benefit of current and future pupils/staff.

Mrs Helen Brown

Parent Governor

(NO PHOTO AVAILABLE)

I have lived in Ashford with my husband for fourteen years and have two children, one of whom attends The North School.

I have worked in the charity/social care sector, mainly with fathers and young families, offering support and group activities.

I wanted to transfer these skills to the governing body and develop new ones
